All About Features
The Features module has been revamped for the .99 release. Rather than simply being a way of marking newswire articles for inclusion in the center column, the Features module now allows you to add any supported content object to the center column of your site. So now you can "feature" images from the media gallery, or the Editorial Policy information document you just updated for example. You can also create stand-alone features, which reside entirely on the home page, for simple summaries, or to highlight a variety of newswire articles on a single topic.
There are two main methods for creating a new Feature:
- Go to the Editor->Features page and click "Create a new feature". This takes you to an interface that allows you to add a title, author, and summary. If you want to create a standalone Feature, fill out those fields, submit the form, and you're done. If you want your Feature to highlight some other content on your site, use the "Reference Class" menu to select the type of content you want to feature, and enter the ID of the content object in the "Reference ID" field. Or use the "Lookup" button to select your content from a list of recent entries.
- Most objects that support the Feature module have a "Make this a Feature" button on the Options page associated with the object. For example, from the Editor->Newswire page, click the Options icon, then click the "Make this a Feature" button. It will automatically create a new Feature for you, importing the newswire article's title, author, and summary. Make any changes you wish (The title and summary of a Feature don't necessarily have to match the title and summary of the article they're pointing to).
In the case of Features pointing to other content, there is a certain disjoint between the Feature object and the content object it points to. The Feature has its own title and summary that may differ from that of its associated newswire article, for example. Just be aware that changing the summary for a featured newswire article will not change the summary for the Feature that points to it.
